Video: Gas Row Begins to Bite in Europe

The Russia-Ukraine gas dispute has cut supplies of Russian gas to a swathe of European countries, many in the depths of a cold winter snap. The conflict escalated dramatically on Monday when Russia ordered Gazprom to cut deliveries of gas to Europe via Ukraine by a sixth, the same amount Moscow accuses Kiev of siphoning off.

Video: EU Assesses Gas Row Impact

The European Commission says that its gas supplies are enough for now, but is calling an emergency meeting to try and find a solution to the Russia-Ukraine gas dispute that has already seen disruptions to some EU countries. Moscow has accused Kiev of stealing gas intended for Europe while Ukraine alleges Russia has cut flows by more than a half through a key export pipeline.

Video: EU To Monitor Gas Supply

European Union states are keeping a close watch for restrictions to their gas supply from Russia following Gazprom's contract dispute with neighbouring Ukraine. Russia's tough stance with Ukraine has lead to accusations of bullying, though Moscow says its row with Kiev is purely commercial. Gazprom's finances have been hurt by the global credit crisis and falling gas prices. On Friday Russia sent a letter to the European Parliament offering to participate in a meeting, at which it would give its evaluation of the disputes.
