Profits were sharply lower at toy company Mattel, maker of Barbie dolls, as recession-battered consumers and a stronger dollar hurt global sales in the fourth quarter. Consumer spending fell in December. Manufacturing activity fell across the nation, but the contraction was less severe than in recent months. Wall Street action signals further weakness for the year.
